Who We Are

NAATSHO

The North American Association of Transportation Safety & Health Officials, Inc. is a transportation industry advocate organization focused on advancing all aspects of occupational safety, health, and wellbeing of transportation employees within the geographic boundaries of the North American continent. NAATSHO is a non-profit corporation and shall be operated for the purpose of educating, disseminating information, increasing public understanding, and promoting safety and health practices, laws, and programs for transportation industry workers. #NAATSHO

Organizational

Objectives

NAATSHO is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with sound business principles and clear objectives. Attaining these objectives, NAATSHO cooperates with International, Federal, State and Provincial regulatory agencies, local governments, other associations or organizations, in sponsoring an annual conference and other such meetings, training, discussions, and instructions in subjects related to transportation worker safety and health as determined to promote our objectives.

  • Advancement

    The advancement of fundamental knowledge within the transportation industry, its basic qualities and physical laws governing its interaction with citizens, and workers within all aspects of transportation.

  • Alliances

    The strengthening and building of alliances with organizations incorporating members of all professions, dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of transportation worker health and safety.

  • Improvement

    The improvement of the professional status of personnel engaged in all aspects of protecting and improving transportation worker health and safety.

NAATSHO

Annual Conference

The NAATSHO Annual Conference was organized in 1967 and conferences have been held every year since. Each safety manager and the department of transportation they represent has unique ideas, programs and practices that are shared at the annual NAATSHO conference, making this event valuable and well attended.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will be hosting the 56th annual NAATSHO conference in Branson, MO August 4-8, 2024.

Successes

To improve safety and health for the transportation worker, NAATSHO acts to benefit the safety and health of the transportation worker:

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation with the help of Michigan State University researchers conducted a study of the effectiveness of green lights on vehicles used for snow removal and deicing activities, and in August 2020 released study results, Effectiveness of Green Strobes on Winter Maintenance Vehicles and Equipment.
  • NAATSHO collectively commented in support of the 2005 adoption of high visibility safety apparel for all roadway workers by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) {Part 634}.
  • NIOSH collectively funded NAATSHO in the 2001 development of “Preventing Backovers and Internal Traffic Control Training CD, Know Your Blind Area Diagrams.” The original research of equipment blind spots with a project summary presentation on August 12, 2002 by T. M. Ruff of “Evaluating roadway construction work zone interventions” at the 35th annual meeting of North American Association of Transportation Safety and Health Officials, Overland Park KS. A follow-up 2002 contract with Caterpillar equipment produced more detailed diagrams of heavy equipment.
  • NAATSHO member Sharon Morales participated on the Consensus Panel for ANSI ISEA 107 for 2015 & 2020.
  • NAATSHO member Sharon Morales participated in the development of ANSI ASC 14 2018-2021, the new standards for ladders, including 14.1 Portable Wood, 14.2 Job Made Ladders, 14.8 Accessories, 14.9 Disappearing Attic Stairways, and 14.11 Step Stools, as well as ANSI ASC 14.3 2006-2021, the new fixed ladder standards which, in 2008, became the foundation for OSHA sub part D. ANSI ASC 14.3 was reinstated in 2018, and a new standard, which was drafted, is projected to be finalized in 2023.
